This is the July 21st cover for The New Yorker magazine and it’s causing quite a stir. I know what they were trying to do but I don’t know why they were surprised at the backlash. I knew that was coming.
I’m not really offended. I mean, let’s be real. There are a lot of people who have this view of Michelle, Barack or both. The New Yorker is confronting that.
What about you? Are you offended by the cover?

Most definitely I’m offended by the cover. First, they should have not put a picture of Osoma benlotden (bad spelling on his name but, who cares?!! You know who I mean) Next, Why in the World would the New York magazine put our American flag in the fireplace to burn?!! The whole picture is awful and whoever thought it was “cool” to post this picture, yet alone draw it should be fired. I can’t believe New York magazine did this; they owe us the America public and Barack and His wife an Apology.. ….Let me be the first,
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Barack Obama:
On behave of our precious America we sincerely apologize for this abomination of a picture that one of the most influential magazines decided to post and we ask for your forgiveness. We love you and your family and we are so grateful you are running for president. Vote For Barack!!
That’s my take ….Peace.
After 25 years of reading The New Yorker, (probably the best written English periodical in the world)), I now have to put it in the same ranks as the Wall street Journal, The Washington Times, American Standard, and all the other rags that feed the stereotypes of race, poor and religion.
Depicting a presidential candidate in Muslim dress burning the American flag is NO JOKE. There is no irony in this at all. In short The New Yorker has just sealed the election for John McCain.
Let’s not forget that The New Yorker is owned by Conde Nast, making it part of the conservative oligarchy that owns and runs the American press. The rich, the religious right, the military establishment, and the racists Republicans now even have “liberal” magazines doing their hit job on the one last hope for democracy in the USA.
Is the cover of the New Yorker racist or tacky. BOTH!!! I just can’t figure out what the editors were thinking when they approved this picture and then decided to put it on the cover. It’s equivalent would be to take McCain, dress him up to look like hitler and then say that they are illustrating the politics of fear. I know they aren’t idiots at the New Yorker. Provocative images sell magazines but this is plain stupidity. I have one further point for the editors of the New Yorker — Don’t touch satire unless you are at LEAST minimally competent to do so.
Reminds me of when FoxNews kept saying- ‘It’s probably not a good idea for anyone to use Barack’s middle name HUSSEIN’… Well they kept saying it over and over in the guise of questioning if it was proper or not, by that time- “PERCEPTION CREATED and MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”. Despite the New Yorker’s attempt at addressing Obama’s media distortion by the right wing media, this has a similar overtone to it. “RE-ENFORCEMENT of already created DISTORTION”. This is very much the same.

I think one of the definitions of humor is that it makes people laugh, and certainly some people will laugh at this thinly disguised attack. Some people laugh when a person sets a cat on fire or pulls the wings off of a butterfly as well, however I don’t think most people consider that particularly funny. I believe there is a parallel here. Just because the people at The New Yorker label this cover as satire and think it is funny does not make it so. The question becomes if these individuals are smart enough to see the humor in their satire are we to believe that they did not see the harm in it as well?
WTF…. U AINT SUPPOSE TO DO NO STUFF LIKE THAT I AM OFFENED…. I ALSO THINK THAT THIS IS RACIEST BECAUSE THEY COULDA KEEP THEM BLACK EVERY BODY NO WAT COLOR THEY IS… THEY WERE JUST TRYING TO BE FUNNY BUT IT AINT….. THEY COULDA DID BETTER….. IF THEY WAS GONNA DO THAT THEY SHOULDA NEVER DONE IT
