My Thoughts on Robin Thicke’s “Sweetest Love” Video
I just had a chance to catch Robin Thicke’s new video for “The Sweetest Love.” I love the song and I think it’s cute. I also want to commend Robin for putting an attractive, albeit overly skinny, black model like Jessica White in his video. This brings me to my next thought(s) though.
I don’t want to hate, after all I think haute couture models who can actually book legitimate designers and products to market (Versace, catalogs, Victoria’s Secret, etc.) are classier than your average Myspace “I’m-a-model-cuz-I-got-my-cousin-to-take-pictures-of-me-in-my-draws” model any day. I loved Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista. I stans for Alek Wek and adored Roshumba and Tomiko. The problem is Jessica White is way too skinny for me. In this day and age where black women are battling eating disorders from anorexia to bulimia at higher rates (it’s no longer the “white girl’s disease”), I think booking Jessica White was the wrong move. Where was Toccara? She was part of the highly popular and innovative Vogue Italia issue that rocked the world of fashion last summer. What’s going on?
Another issue I have is there is ONE Naomi Campbell. As witnessed by her damned near non-existent edges, the “I got Cherokee in my family” weave look is not only dangerous, but played. Again I think she is lovely, and I am glad that he picked a darker skinned sister, but I don’t know if she was the right pic.
Now for me, it’s not a color issue as a truth issue. As witnessed over at another popular blog, the main discussion was on the fact that she was dark skinned. No disrespect to my light skinned sisters, Lord knows my grandmother and great-grandmother are light-skinned, but we’re not blind here. We get the message. Dark-skinned sisters aren’t really getting booked for these videos and there’s something to be said about that. I don’t blame those women. They have to get paid.
At the end of the day, what matters most is the song and the song is the truth. Thoughts?

Ditto your comment on the fake looking weave. I saw photos of Jessica with her own hair; in one it was cut in a curly shag style, in another it was a chin length straight bob… she looked waaaay cuter. That thing on her head in the video must itch or feel hot the way she keeps touching it. LOL
